How can aquarium limescale be removed safely?

White scale appears mainly at the waterline when evaporation concentrates and deposits carbonates. The deposit does not itself raise water hardness; it reflects minerals already present. Correct splashing or leaks, and top up evaporation with water suited to the system without abruptly changing its parameters.

Start with mechanical cleaning

For a small external mark, unplug nearby equipment, protect the tank opening and use a scraper or pad compatible with glass or acrylic. Do not use a metal blade on acrylic or a sponge containing soap or abrasive. Remove deposits near seams without cutting into silicone.

For a heavily scaled tank or device, transfer animals to suitable temporary housing and keep the biofilter separately wet, oxygenated and at an appropriate temperature. Isolate and unplug pumps, heaters and lights before dismantling. A partial drain with fish left in the aquarium does not protect them from acidic runoff.

Use acid only outside an occupied system

If mechanical action is insufficient, use a material-compatible product on the empty surface and follow its instructions. Diluted vinegar or citric acid can dissolve carbonates, but no universal concentration suits every appliance, seam, rock or decoration. Wear the specified protection, ventilate and prevent contact with animals or biological media.

Never mix an acid, including vinegar or citric acid, with bleach or a chlorinated cleaner: the mixture can release toxic chlorine gas. Do not use scented household detergent in an aquarium.

Rinse and recommission

Remove the product and rinse thoroughly until no residue or odour remains. Inspect seams, pumps and surfaces before reassembly. Refill with prepared water, restart filtration and aeration, then verify temperature, pH and conductivity or salinity for the system before gradually returning animals.

Monitor behaviour, ammonia and nitrite afterward, especially if the biofilter was interrupted. If scale returns quickly, investigate splashing, excessive evaporation, mineral-rich top-up water or unsuitable settings instead of repeatedly applying acid cleaners.
